Blueberry Oatmeal Lactation Muffins Recipe

Baby E & I are still on the breastfeeding journey. My body is definitely going through hormonal ups and down (as is my mood, ha) so some days I can tell he isn’t getting much milk from me. Not to mention he gets pretty upset when things are flowing smoothly. When I need a treat that is also lactation boosting, I turn to these blueberry oatmeal lactation muffins. Blueberry muffins have always been my favorite muffins. I can remember stopping at the local diner down the street from my high school for a toasted blue. Those were the best blueberry muffins I’ve ever had. EVER! Shout out to Academy in Fort Greene Brooklyn. Still standing strong and I’m sure the Brooklyn Tech crowd has a lot to do with that. 

Anyway, I’ve done a lot of banana and oatmeal meals for my lactation needs but I wanted something a little more fun (to me) while trying to mask the taste of Brewer’s Yeast. How the taste stands out against bananas is beyond me. I figured giving blueberries a try may just work. Guess what? It did. Now to be honest, my mind still tells me I taste the Brewer’s Yeast. I made this recipe with 2 tablespoons but next time I may do one. Either way, these muffins are delicious and easy to whip up while my little non napper takes a surprise siesta. Oh Baby E, I promise sleep is a wonderful thing. Get into it.

Fresh blueberries are the best. I try to buy organic if available since blueberries are also Little Z’s favorite fruit. I make a few muffins sans the Brewer’s Yeast just for her. I also make a quick cooked blueberry smash for Baby E. He loves it. Anyway mamas, give these muffins a try and let me know how you like them. You can use all milk or all yogurt as well as pick your favorite of each (full fat, flavored, etc.)

Blueberry Oatmeal Lactation Muffins

Ingredients
  1. 1 cup oatmeal (rolled or old fashion)
  2. 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  3. 1/2 cup Greek Yogurt (full fat)
  4. 1/2 cup milk
  5. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  6. 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  7. 2/3 cup brown sugar
  8. 1 teaspoon vanilla
  9. 2 tablespoons ground flaxmeal
  10. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  11. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  12. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  13. 2 tbsp Brewers Yeast
  14. 1 cup fresh blueberries
Instructions
  1. Heat oven to 350°.
  2. Use muffin liners in muffin tin
  3. Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine wet ingredients (yogurt, eggs, butter, and vanilla)
  5. Fold wet mixture into dry mixture; stir to combine
  6. Gently fold in blueberries
  7. Spoon into muffin tins
  8. Bake until tops are golden and springs back when gently touched, 20-25 minutes.

      You can use regular yogurt. Use whatever you prepare.

    At what point in the recipe do you add the flaxseed meal, milk, and brewers yeast? These three items are not mentioned in the directions.

      Hi Robin,

      Thanks for pointing that out. All the dry ingredients are combined together including the flaxseed meal and brewers yeast. The milk goes with the wet ingredients.

    Thanks, MJ! I made these muffins for my DIL who recently went back to work and is keeping up with the breastfeeding/pumping. They are fabulous and very helpful to her. I’ve made them twice already and I’m sure I will make them again. I’m SO glad I found this recipe of yours. ?

    Made these today.. tweaked just a little bit.. I wanted a little more flax and brewers yeast in each muffin. So I doubled the the measurements to 4 tablespoons of flaxmeal and 4 tablespoons of brewers yeast. Substituted coconut oil for butter.. made 24 mini muffins.. still turned out great. Very similar to a bran muffin. Thanks for the recipe!!

    Could these muffins be made ahead of time and frozen? I am on baby prep and making lots of frozen meals and snacks for when my little guy gets here!

      They can be frozen but I’m not sure the ingredients will remain potent enough to help with lactation. I say freeze a batch and see if they help once you start to eat them. Good luck.

    Why the brewers yeast? I’ve not come across it before, how does it benefit?

      Brewers Yeast is said to aid in lactation for milk production. I’ve made the muffins and smoothie without it and still saw benefits. Good luck.

      No. But you can skip the yeast altogether.
